    ENVIRONMENTAL Topics

Grist Magazine: Environmental news and humor
Grist is an online environmental magazine. Our credo: Pull no punches, take no prisoners, accept no advertising. Eschew the wealth and fame that so often seduce online environmental journalists. And try to have a better sense of humor than a pack of fur protesters.

Grist, a project of Earth Day Network, tackles environmental topics with energy and fresh perspective. Our goal is to inform, entertain, provoke, and encourage creative thinking about environmental problems and solutions. We publish new content each weekday -- in-depth reporting, cartoons, summaries of breaking news stories, diary entries from activists, book reviews, green investment advice, and lots more. We're based in Seattle, and our contributors are scattered the world 'round.

    POLITICS..American Foreign Policy

    TNI - The National Interest
THE NATIONAL INTEREST is a quarterly magazine devoted to American foreign policy and world politics. In the post-Cold War era, America finds itself without a clear set of governing assumptions about either one. A principal aim of The National Interest is to stimulate and focus discussion about just what those assumptions should be.

The National Interest goes beyond foreign policy in the conventional sense-for history, culture, economics, technology, philosophy and religion all interplay to affect the behavior and interaction of states. Our topics range from the dignity of the Chinese people to the nationalisms that are pulling Britain apart, and from the role of religion in American foreign policy to NATO expansion.

    Bad Science
This page is maintained by Alistair B. Fraser in an attempt to sensitize teachers and students to examples of the bad science often taught in schools, universities, and offered in popular articles and even textbooks.

Here, I explain what I mean by bad science and provide pointers to specialized pages on bad science within various disciplines. In particular this page points to Bad Meteorology , a page also maintained by Alistair B. Fraser.
When I created this page, in January, 1995, I naïvely expected that other frustrated teachers would rush to build sites devoted to, say, Bad Archeology and Bad Biology. It has not happened. Apparently, most teachers believe everything they teach. Sigh, one is reminded of Lily Tomlin when she said , No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up.

    TECHNOLOGY..**LENR**

    Infinite Energy Magazine
    ** Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions **

The bi-monthly magazine of the non-profit New Energy Foundation.

New Energy Foundation, Inc. (NEF) is a non-profit corporation based in the State of New Hampshire. It is approved by the IRS as a 501c3 public charity corporation (pending), therefore contributions to it are tax deductible. NEF publishes Infinite Energy: The Magazine of New Energy Technology, which has been in operation since early 1995. NEF also runs a testing laboratory, New Energy Research Laboratory (NERL), to verify or reject claims of anomalous performance in particular energy-producing devices brought to its attention. New Energy is the term applied to new sources of energy that are currently not recognized as feasible by the "scientific establishment," but for which overwhelming and compelling evidence exists in at least three categories:

    1. New hydrogen physics (a.k.a. "cold fusion," more generally Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions or LENR, "hydrino" physics, and other water-based energy sources).

    2. Vacuum energy, Zero Point Energy or "ZPE," Aether energy, or Space energy— descriptions of vast energy sources from the vacuum state.

    3. Environmental energy, i.e. energy from sensible thermal energy (in particular, energy of molecular motion), through significant extensions to the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

NEF also has a grant-awarding function. It dispenses to outside researchers and developers carefully targeted research and development funding grants from NEF's reserves of charitable contributions.

    LENR-CANR.org
This site features a library of papers on LENR, Low Energy Nuclear Reactions, also known as Cold Fusion. (CANR, Chemically Assisted Nuclear Reactions, is another term for this phenomenon.) It features a library of more than 180 original scientific papers in Acrobat format, reprinted with permission from the authors and publishers. The papers are linked to a bibliography of more than 2,900 journal papers, news articles and books about LENR.

    Black Light Power, Inc.
BLACKLIGHT POWER, Inc. (BLP) of Cranbury, New Jersey, is developing a revolutionary technology based on novel hydrogen chemistry. More explicitly, energy is catalytically released as the electrons of atomic hydrogen are induced to undergo transitions to lower energy levels corresponding to fractional quantum numbers with the production of plasma, light, and novel hydrogen compounds.

The Company uses a chemically generated or assisted plasma to form atomic hydrogen and a catalyst which react through a nonradiative energy transfer to form lower-energy hydrogen atoms called hydrinos. Since hydrinos have energy levels much lower than uncatalyzed hydrogen atoms, the energy release is intermediate between chemical and nuclear energies.

The net enthalpy released may be over 100 times that of combustion. Thus, the catalysis of atomic hydrogen represents a new source of energy with the source of hydrogen fuel obtained by diverting a fraction of the output energy of the process to split water into its elemental constituents. Moreover, rather than air pollutants or radioactive waste, novel hydride compounds with potential commercial applications are the products. Since the power is in the form of a plasma, direct high-efficiency, low-cost energy conversion may be possible, thus, avoiding a heat engine such as a turbine or a reformer-fuel-cell system.

Significantly lower capital costs and lower commercial operating costs than that of any known competing energy source are anticipated.

    Edmund Storms_Cold Fusion
Edmund Storms obtained a Ph.D. in radiochemistry from Washington University (St. Louis) and is retired from the Los Alamos National Laboratory after thirty-four years of service.

His work there involved basic research in the field of high temperature chemistry as applied to materials used in nuclear power and propulsion reactors, including studies of the "cold fusion" effect. Over seventy reviewed publications and monographs resulted from this work as well as several books, all describing an assortment of material properties. He presently lives in Santa Fe where he is investigating the "cold fusion" effect in his own laboratory.

These studies have resulted in sixteen presentations to various conferences including the ACS and APS. In addition, twenty-one papers have been published including three complete scientific reviews of the field, one published in 1991, another in 1996 and the latest one in 1998. A critical evaluation of the Pons-Fleichmann Effect was published in 2000. In May 1993, he was invited to testify before a congressional committee about the "cold fusion" effect. In 1998, Wired magazine honored him as one of 25 people who are making significant contributions to new ideas.

    Jean-Louis Naudin .. France
"....If we could produce electric effects of the required quality, this whole planet and the conditions of existence on it could be transformed. The sun raises the water of the oceans and winds drive it to distant regions where it remains in state of most delicate balance. If it were in our power to upset it when and wherever desired, this mighty life-sustaining stream could be at will controlled. We could irrigate arid deserts, create lakes and rivers and provide motive power in unlimited amount. This would be the most efficient way of harnesing the sun to the uses of man......" "Free Energy" Does not Violate Laws of Physics

Free energy does not mean perpetual motion. Extracting power from the vast sea of energy that surrounds us is no more perpetual motion than a photovoltaic cell. It does not violate the second law of thermodynamics. It is a conversion of energy from one form into another form that is usable -- not the creation of energy out of nothing.

    E - Ink: HTML
Electronic ink is a new material that will have far-reaching impact on how society receives its information.

Electronic ink is a proprietary material that is processed into a film for integration into electronic displays. Although revolutionary in concept, electronic ink is a straightforward fusion of chemistry, physics and electronics to create this new material. The principal components of electronic ink are millions of tiny microcapsules, about the diameter of a human hair. In one incarnation, each microcapsule contains positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles suspended in a clear fluid. When a negative electric field is applied, the white particles move to the top of the microcapsule where they become visible to the user. This makes the surface appear white at that spot. At the same time, an opposite electric field pulls the black particles to the bottom of the microcapsules where they are hidden. By reversing this process, the black particles appear at the top of the capsule, which now makes the surface appear dark at that spot.

Voice Analysis tools for Security, Commercial and personal use - Lie Detector of the New generation

Nemesysco's patented Poly-Layered Voice Analysis measures 18 parameters of speech in real-time for interrogators at police, military and secret-services agencies.

The heart of Nemesysco's security-oriented technology is a signal-processing engine that is said to use more than 8,000 algorithms each time it analyzes an incoming voice waveform. In this way it detects levels of various emotional states simultaneously from the pitch and speed of the voice.

Called Ex-Sense Pro, the V software measures voice for a variety of parameters including deception, excitement, stress, mental effort, concentration, hesitation, anger, love and lust. It works prerecorded, over the phone and live, the company said. V Entertainment recommends it for screening phone calls, checking the truthfulness of people with whom you deal or gauging romantic interest.

The display can show each measured parameter in a separate window, with real-time traces of instantaneous measurements while flashing the overall for each parameter, such as "false probable," "high stress" and "SOS." Ultimately, the company plans to offer versions of its detectors for cell phones, dating services, teaching aids, toys and games.
