Open
Source Software
|
Open source software has
increasingly made inroads in various classes of computer software from
relatively simple games and utilities to full-fledged operating systems and
office productivity suites. Although open source software is generally not
backed by corporations, open source developers have repeatedly proven that
stable, secure, high-quality software can be produced and distributed for only a
fraction of the cost of traditional “closed source” software.

Regeristy
Backup
|
The Windows registry is a special database that contains the
configuration settings needed by Windows programs and hardware. It contains information about your screen
colors, wallpaper, hardware devices and associated drivers, settings for your
programs, and much more. It is (ideally)
the repository for all information that was saved in .INI files in the versions
of Windows predating Windows 95. |

File
Extentions
|
This
article contains links to pictures that serve to
illustrate some of the explanations for managing
file extensions. Because of some slight differences
between Windows 95/98/Me and Windows XP, I have
inserted double links for each picture. A
picture that applies to Windows 95/98/Me is denoted
by the link “9x”. A picture that applies to
Windows XP is denoted by the link “XP”. Depending
on your screen resolution, some pictures may not
display unless you configure Internet Explorer to
full screen mode. You can toggle between regular
mode and full screen by pressing the F11 key.
